ABOUT US

Harry’s restaurant is named after Harry Hems, a master carver who occupied the premises following its design and construction by the architect Robert Medley Fulford in 1882.

Harry arrived in Exeter in 1886 to work on the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. On arrival, he found a horseshoe lying in the road, which he interpreted as a lucky omen and so decided to settle in Exeter. The premises were then known as ‘Ye Luckie Horseshoe Studios; the lucky horseshoe can still be seen above the main door of the restaurant. On 4th December each year, Harry hosted a Christmas dinner for the aged poor – this tradition is still commemorated at Harry’s with an annual charity dinner.

In November 1993, Simon and Annette Pounds opened 86 Longbrook Street as Harry’s Restaurant. The whole family was roped in and slaved away, successfully establishing Harry’s, before sloping off to other careers, including building, law and the Army. (So if you remember them and are in a pickle, help will be at hand!).

Sam formally took over from Mum and dad in 2004 – and Harry’s continues to go from strength to strength. The third generation started working in the restaurant, with Sam’s eldest daughters, Phoebe and Zoe, both inheriting their mother’s flair for the business. Younger daughters Tigerlily and India also lend a hand; keeping the family tradition alive and kicking. And for the early birds, freshly brewed coffee every morning at 8 am (worms subject to availability).

Most famous member of staff has to be Will Young, who worked at Harry’s in his final year at Exeter University. He made pretty poor cappuccinos and forgot many a pudding, but made up for it with his trademark charm. He’s been back to see us since he got his singing job and if it all goes pear-shaped we’ll keep his job open!

Our ethic: Quality, tasty food at affordable prices; a varied menu with something for everyone and a relaxed, fun, friendly environment for staff and customers. Harry’s uses locally sourced produce wherever possible and coming from a farming background, Sam ensures that Harry’s meat comes from farms with high standards of animal welfare.

Built and run by the Pounds family and friends, Harry’s remains a truly great family enterprise and is currently celebrating 18 successful years as a unique independent restaurant.
